Each single-topic issue is in printed wraps with eight to twelve pages of illustrated text by an authority on the selected subject, plus six photogravure black and white plates with extensive explanatory information on the back. These plates are loosely laid into the covers and are often missing. This issue has all six plates present, and include the following: The Constitution and the Java; Commodore Esek Hopkins; The United States and the Macedonian; The Kearsarge and the Alabama; The Constitution and the Guirriere; and Captain Isaac Hull.
