First edition [1950]. Early work on American efforts in the area of human flight, mainly through use of hot air balloons, but also by other means. Includes a history of the author's fifteen years' experience in aerial voyages, instructions in the art of making balloons, parachutes, etc., and much more. Illustrated with twelve lithographed plates plus a frontis portrait of the author. Dark brown blind stamped cloth with gilt spine lettering, 310 pages. Light rubbing, mainly at the edges, good hinges, firm text block, old transparent dampstain to the outer edge of pages beginning as a very small spot on the edge of page 261, slowly increasing in size toward the end of the book to extend about 1.75 inches in from the outer margin, but with the stain not visible on the three plates within the affected area. Pages otherwise very clean with some very light occasional foxing to the text pages, mainly at the outer edges, no names or other markings.
