This book includes self-contained true stories of American history, including the expected (i.e. Discovery of the Pacific by Balboa; The Jamestown Colony; The Missouri Compromise; The Monitor and the Merrimack; Pickett's Charge, etc.); and the less expected (The Indian Massacre in Virginia; The 'Grand Model' Government; The Bacon Rebellion; The Bon Home Richard; The Cowpens; The Constitution and Guirriere; The Ordinance of Nullification, etc.); much more. Illustrated with 32 full page engravings and four color plates. Maroon bonded leather covers, all edges gilt, 569 pages. Covers badly chipped, worn and detached, spine covering absent, preliminaries up to page iv attached to front cover, remaining text block sound with no loosened pages, pages clean and unmarked. Includes such luminaries as: Washington Irving; Edgar Allen Poe; John Greenleaf Whittier; Louisa May Alcott; Ben Franklin; Bayard Taylor; Thomas Jefferson; Daniel Webster; Ralph Waldo Emerson; Mark Twain; Longfellow; Oliver Wendell Holmes; Francis Parkman; Bret Harte; Harriet Beecher Stowe; Nathaniel Hawthorne; John Quincy Adams; Lydia H.
