New York J & J Harper 1833 First US Edition Hard Cover Good
First American edition. Two-volume set. A criticism of the English people and the English social, religious, political and other systems, by one of its own. Blue-green cloth with paper spine labels, 243p.+ 8p. ads, 220p. + 8p. ads. Ex-library, but not obviously so, with the only evidence being a number stamp on the reverse side of each title page and unused due date forms mounted to the rear free endpaper of each volume. Gift inscription in volume 2, dated 1833. Volume I good to very good, with worn exterior but good hinges and firm binding, pages lightly foxed but free from any noted chips or tears. Owner name in pencil on title page. Volume II more worn, with spine strip missing and front cover and free endpaper nearly detached. Lightly foxed, rear free endpaper chipped, otherwise free from any noted chips or tears. A useful copy, internally quite clean.

Two volumes in green cloth blind-stamed in a floral design, paper spine labels, 212 + 199 plus sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear of volume II. Covers worn and soiled with age-toning and light edge chipping to the spine labels (still quite readable), dampstains to rear cover of the first volume and front cover of the second, joints/hinges and text blocks sound, pages generally clean with occasional light foxing.

Copyright edition. Attractively bound in three quarter vellum over blue marbled boards, dual spine labels in maroon and black, gilt lettering, decorative gilt spine design. Covers rubbed with some soil, a bit of chipping to the spine labels and marbled boards, minor closed split to the spine, good hinges, sound text block, age-toned but clean pages with a bit of foxing to the first and last few pages, name on front free endpaper.

Undated, ca. 1880. Attractive copy in Victorian decorated binding. Mustard colored cloth lettered and extensively decorated in gilt and black, 394 pages. Light rubbing to the extremities and just a bit of light shelf soil, a bit of waviness to a small portion of the spine fabric, good hinges, sound text block, minor foxing to frontis, pages age-toned but clean, gift notation dated 1885 on preliminary blank, no other markings.
