1 Lehman, Milton. Preface By Charles A. Lindbergh This High Man : The Life of Robert H. Goddard
New York Farrar, Straus and Company 1963 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Very Good Signed
New York: Farrar, Straus and Company, 1963. First edition, 1963. Fascinating biography of the inventor of the modern rocket, from materials collected over more than seven years. Includes both technical details and personal anecdotes, a description of the man in full. Illustrated in black and white from photographs. This copy belonged to a family who was friendly with Goddard while he was at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and there is a printed Christmas card from the Goddards (unsigned) laid in loosely at the front. In addition, there is a typed letter from the author, dated 1956, inviting contributions of "memories, anecdotes, and knowledge that would be useful in bringing alive the personality and work of Goddard", signed by Lehman. There are also some handwritten drafts of responses, one beginning with "I remember R.H.G. at our house. He was madly in love with my mother's youngest sister, my Aunt Grace. He begged her to marry him, but she refused...". There are also numerous old clippings from rocket launches, a patent battle, and some old unidentified photos (not of which appear to show Goddard, rockets, etc.) which may or may not be related, but which were stored in the book anyway. Light green cloth, 430 pages, illustrated dustjacket. The book has some light edgewear, good hinges, sound text block, very clean pages with a brief pencil note in one margin, no names or other markings, front free endpaper a bit age-toned from the old clippings. The mylar protected dustjacket is priceclipped and has some edgewear and soil, tiny edge chips and tears, foxed front inner flap. . Includes Signed Letter from Author, Other Items. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Dust jacket present. First Edition.
