London: Jarrold and Sons, 1901. First edition, undated . Worn but complete. Scarce children's title, a fantasy tale in verse about a trip to the moon, planets and stars in a balloon. Odd, rather nonsensical story that includes being captured, caged and fattened up by Christmas turkeys on the moon, only to be rescued by Mrs. Edmonton's goat, who falls out of the balloon while leaving the moon (only to turn up later). Not all the characters are as sinister as the turkeys - the Three Happy Lions who live on Jupiter are downright hospitable. All of this fascinating silliness is illustrated in black and white in a style redolent of both James Thurber and Maurice Sendak. The book measures about 9 inches tall and 12.25 inches wide, illustrated paper covered boards with red cloth spine, 58 pages. Both covers are illustrated and have some rubbing and chipping nearest the edges and are age-toned and a bit soiled. The spine is faded, soiled and worn, with some fraying to the ends. The book is internally quite good, with the staples holding the binding, barely visible in the inner margins, a bit rusted, some light finger soil to the first couple of pages, no chips or tears other than a tiny closed tear (about a half inch) to the lower edge of one page. The endpapers are quite age-toned and brittle with many tiny chips around the edges, the front free endpaper is nearly detached. The hinges are very lightly cracked, mainly cosmetic due to the chipping of the brittle endpaper material. Two two-leaf gatherings are recently detached from the binding staples (they slipped out when we were describing the book, despite reasonable care) - no other sections appear to be in any imminent danger of detaching. There is a name and 1902 date on the half-title, no other markings.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. Oblong 4to. First Edition.
