Important reference on American law of the mid-nineteenth century, about half the book devoted to general law and the other half to the laws of the states admitted at the time, the last being California. The general section includes the expected laws about financial transactions, landlord and tenant, patent laws, wills, partnerships, etc., as well as laws concerning public lands and military bounty lands, charter of vessels, and more. The states section includes a double-page map for each state plus a small engraved representation of the state seal at the beginning of each state section. There are 32 double-page maps in all, including one of the United States as a whole, with the next-to-last map of California also including Utah and New Mexico. The state sections discuss such matters as specific laws concerning mortgages, contracts, etc., as well as rights of married women; homestead exemptions, rates of interest, etc. Printed salmon-colored boards with brown leather spine lettered and ruled in gilt, 359 pages plus a one-page publisher's ad. Covers edgeworn with some surface soil, spine heavily chipped, with joints cracked but covers firmly attached. Pages lightly to moderately foxed, two pages with some edge chips (not affecting printed area), name on first blank lightly written in pencil, no other markings. Maps in very good condition with only light foxing. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition.
