Philadelphia: Collins, Printer, 1861. First American edition [1861] of this vastly influential study of the pathway of conduction of the spinal cord and its relationship to paralysis. Dark brown cloth with spine lettered in gilt, covers decorated in blind, 118 pages. Corners and spine ends chipped, other edgewear, good hinges, sound text block but title page detached and trimmed around the edges, errata page heavily foxed and is attached to a stub past the title page, some light occasional foxing to a few other pages, rear endpaper foxed, pages slightly age-yellowed but clean and free from names or other markings. Brown-Sequard was a pioneer in the study of the nervous system, with greatest focus on the spinal cord - a form of paralysis was later named after him, the Brown-Sequard's Syndrome. The book contains four lectures: Proofs of the Existence of Reflex Paraplegia; Diagnosis and Treatment of the Reflex Paraplegia; Diagnosis and Treatment of Paraplegia Due to Myelitis, Meningitis, or a Simple Congestion; Symptoms and Treatment of Various Forms of Paraplegia due to White Softening, Hemorrage, Tumors, etc. - General Review of the Symptions of Paraplegia and Conclusions of the Course.
