The book is about an Indian named Tan-ta-quid-geon who had remained previously "unnamed", since it was traditional to provide historical credit to the Sachem of the tribe. Tan-ta-quid-geon was of the Mohegan tribe in what is now Connecticut, and the account of his life, based on fact, is augmented with literary reenactments of ceremonies, etc. that have been drawn from other sources about the Mohegan, Abenaki and other northeastern American tribes. Illustrated in black and white. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the frontis "For a better understanding of Indian character - Gertrude Bell Browne". Light brown cloth printed in darker brown, patterned endpapers, 299 pages. The front and rear panels of the dustjacket, plus flaps have been neatly cut out and laid in loosely at the front. Some rubbing to the corners and spine ends, good hinges, sound text block, very clean pages free from other names or markings.. Inscribed by The Author. First Edition. Hard Cover.
